{"id":10996,"date":"2025-07-25T15:56:50","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T15:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/steelorg.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=10996"},"modified":"2025-07-25T15:56:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T15:56:50","slug":"five-steel-groups-pledge-support-for-steel-tariffs-applaud-actions-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.steel.org\/2025\/07\/five-steel-groups-pledge-support-for-steel-tariffs-applaud-actions-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Steel Groups Pledge Support For Steel Tariffs, Applaud Actions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WASHINGTON, DC<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 Five organizations representing the American steel industry today wrote to President Trump to reiterate their strong support for the Section 232 steel tariffs and the program\u2019s expanded coverage and to urge retention of the steel tariffs during ongoing bilateral negotiations on other tariffs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steel.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">American Iron and Steel Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (AISI), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/steelnet.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Steel Manufacturers Association<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (SMA), Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports (CPTI), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssina.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Specialty Steel Industry of North America<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (SSINA) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">American Institute of Steel Construction<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (AISC) this morning sent a joint letter to the president applauding \u201cbold action to increase the tariffs to 50 percent\u201d and requesting that the administration not grant special arrangements \u201cto foreign countries that would eliminate or reduce steel Section 232 tariff coverage\u201d as negotiations on the administration\u2019s proposed reciprocal tariffs continue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe Section 232 steel tariffs remain critical for the American steel industry, as global steel market conditions remain challenging and industry capacity utilization remains below the 80 percent utilization goal identified in the Commerce Department\u2019s 2018 Section 232 report,\u201d the letter states, adding that foreign government subsidies and other unfair trade practices have led to increased overproduction of steel in foreign markets.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUnfortunately, rather than taking actions to address the impact of the global steel overcapacity crisis in their own markets, many of our trading partners seem focused on negotiating unwarranted exemptions to the U.S. Section 232 steel tariffs. We have seen reports of requests from many governments, including Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia, for exemptions from the Section 232 steel tariffs as part of their negotiating positions regarding the reciprocal tariffs.
