{"id":1906,"date":"2016-05-01T18:18:30","date_gmt":"2016-05-01T18:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/steelorg.jt5b07vb-liquidwebsites.com\/?p=1906"},"modified":"2020-09-21T18:19:41","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T18:19:41","slug":"2016-gary-memorial-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.steel.org\/2016\/05\/2016-gary-memorial-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"Schmitt Awarded Gary Memorial Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SALT LAKE CITY, UT<\/strong> \u2013 The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today that Chuck Schmitt, president of SSAB Americas, is the 2016 recipient of the Gary Memorial Medal\u2014the industry\u2019s highest honor. Schmitt, the Institute\u2019s immediate past chairman, was recognized with the award during AISI\u2019s 124th General Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>In presenting the award, John Ferriola, incoming AISI chairman and chairman, president and CEO of Nucor, said, \u201cOn behalf of the Institute, I\u2019m honored to present this distinguished Gary Memorial Medal to Chuck. Chuck has been an outspoken leader in his year at the helm of AISI. He has helped raise the profile on trade, energy, and keeping steel the backbone of the manufacturing sector. He is tremendously deserving of this award, and of the gratitude of all of us in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The medal\u2019s inscription reads: \u201cFor his outstanding leadership in representing the critical public policy interests of the Institute and American manufacturing in a period of tremendous challenge; [and] for his unwavering commitment of time and energy to matters that will impact the future of the North American steel industry, the Institute and the people we support and serve to keep our vital industry strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt served as chairman of the AISI Board of Directors from May 2015-May 2016 and chaired a number of board-level committees. He was elected to the AISI Board of Directors in 2011. He will remain as an officer of the AISI Board for another year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Gary Award, Ferriola presented the \u201cAssociate Member of the Year\u201d award to Bill Rackoff, CEO of ASKO, Inc., for his dedication to the U.S. steel industry as an AISI Associate Member.
